retail store sell an item, not a service. most stores in the mall count as retail. clothing, jewlery, shoes, games, movies, etc are retail items. a babrer shop is not a retial store, a resturant is not a retail store. the gap is a retail store, kay jewelers is a retail store....

Unfortunately without any job experience, you HAVE to start out in retail or food service. A lot of employers always hear about how people claim to have good dedication (not saying you don't) but you need to think about it from their view. Unless you have connections, it's more likely to accept a job in retail/food service. At the same time, to help assist yourself in moving up, volunteer at a place where there is opportunity for advancement. Sometimes it's easy to forget the power or volunteer ...
